As technology has evolved so has the format of our information sources. Education and careers in every sector are continually adapting to technological shifts and information needs, including the desire for immediate, but short-term, ownership of books. Electronic books have gained more popularity as it’s become easy to rent eBooks from any device, have immediate access, and is often less expensive than purchasing a book. The chart visualizes a shift in information usage, displaying the annual growth of eBook sales compared to print books in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany over the last decade. All three countries have seen an increase in eBook revenue and a (small) decline in print revenue.

eBook Benefits and Challenges

There is far more opportunity to engage with content when using an eBook. Many eBooks (including this one) includes interactive content. Whether it’s is meant for children or adults, the interactive material can be very helpful in a learning environment. There is also a convenience to being mobile and having several books at the touch of your fingers, and using a book online provides the ability to search for keywords. you need in seconds.

There are some challenges to consider when making the digital switch. Concerns include health effects around excessive screen time, both mental and physical. There are also individuals who find technology challenging, lack the resources, or simply prefer physical books.

Accessing and Navigating an eBook

Steely Library provides access to many eBooks. On the library’s homepage, search using the books & media tab. Search using keywords, titles, or author names. Books in the collection are clearly labeled as Book or eBook. View the image below for an overview of a typical eBook found within Steely Library.
