This book is intended to pursue questions at the intersection nutritional sciences and pharmacology. A 2013 Mayo Clinic survey estimates that 7 out of 10 Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than half take two. Despite prominent use of prescription medications, issues related to nutrition because of prescription use – and vice versa – how nutrition can affect drug action – are not typically explored. Section I introduces readers to pharmacology terms and concepts related to drug and nutrient interactions. Mechanisms underlying drug and nutrient interactions with drug administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion are also described. Section II describes the impact of drugs on nutrient status and conversely, the effect of nutrient status/nutrition on pharmacotherapy. Section III considers the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on foods versus drugs, and the regulatory framework underlying pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, foods and food products.

Doctoral Research in Arts Administration helps incoming students in arts management or arts administration PhD programs prepare to conduct doctoral-level research. Developed and presented as a four-week, librarian-led micro course for incoming PhD students at the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts Department of Arts Administration, this open-access textbook for the course offers workshops, chapters, and activities that can be adapted for other research methods classes and other information literacy teaching contexts.

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

• Develop a sense of belonging and connection with their institution’s academic library
• Distinguish between a wide variety of publication types needed for doctoral level research in Arts Administration
• Describe issues of access, subscription, and value encountered when conducting academic library research
• Manage research protocols for collecting data and bibliographic citations, and for citing others’ research
• Employ the resources and services offered by their institution’s academic library in a manner suited to online/distance learning

Composición y gramática en español is a course in Spanish designed to provide third-year Spanish learners with structured and guided writing practice to assist them in progressing their writing abilities in Spanish from the intermediate to the advanced levels (according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines) at the presentational (descriptive, narrative, expository and argumentative essays), and interpersonal (social media, and email) communication modes. Different types of writing essays (a description, a narration, an exposition, and an argumentative essay) will be introduced to sharpen learners’ writing skills in Spanish. Grammar review and communicative application of the studied structures, which are fundamental to developing advanced writing skills, constitute an important part of this course.

Action research is a common journey for graduate students in education and other human science fields. This book attempts to meet the needs of graduate students, in-service teachers, and any other educators interested in action research and/or self-study. The primary purpose of this book is to offer clear steps and practical guidance to those who intend to carry out action research for the first time. As educators begin their action research journey, we feel it is vital to pose four questions: What is action research, and how is it distinct from other educational research? When is it appropriate for an educator to conduct an action research project in their context? How does an educator conduct an action research project? What does an educator do with the data once the action research project has been conducted?

In the second section of the book students are assisted with the challenges of developing research questions, evaluating and choosing the right sources, searching for information, avoiding plagiarism, and other useful topics.

In this class, students will explore diverse topics in the geosciences at a high level. Students who complete this class will have had the opportunity acquire the skills needed to engage in advanced geologic study.
