Principles and Elements

In this Cathedral there is a variety of lines and patterns with shapes in the windows, walls and floor, which create contrast which create contrast with the neutral color of the columns and ceilings. Also, the columns and arches create rhythm and balance, defining movement through the space. The different gothic elements inside the space create unity with the spires seen from the outside. The outside of the cathedral has a lot of different textures created by the materials utilized such as limestone.

Connections 

In this cathedral there are a lot of connections, for example, time, history, elements, human experience. Some parts of this building were completely destroyed after Word War II, however, some of the elements such as the ceiling survived and is the same one used in the reconstruction. Also, we can see how the gothic style elements create unity and connections around the space such as sculptures and spires. Finally, the main hallway connects the entrance to the main altar.

Materials

The designers of this cathedral utilized different materials such as a variety of stone, such as trachyte and sandstone for the outside and limestone for some sculptures. The black color of the outside patina has been a characteristic feature if this cathedral due to the weather and biofouling. For the inside, the windows are made of stained-glass with very vibrant colors that change with the sunlight throughout the day. Finally, the ceilings are made of iron which saved the cathedral from destruction in World War II.

Light + Color

Light and color are key elements in this Cathedral. The designers decided to utilize a lot of natural light which enters through the large stained-glass windows creating vibrant color reflections inside the place. Also, we can see artificial warm light on strategic and specific places inside the Cathedral to create emphasis and a spiritual experience.

Experience

This is one of the biggest Cathedrals in the world which means that it has a lot of tourism. With just the height of this place we can see the grandeur and majesty that this place wants to express. For those who are religious, this beautiful place creates a spiritual and emotional impact that connects with God. It allows moments of reflection, contemplation and prayer.

Theories 

When it comes to theories for the Cologne Cathedral, reflects the human-centered design theory since it was made mainly for humans. The cathedral creates a big emotional and spiritual impact on the users. For example, in the space where is located the Shrine of the Three Kings there are side altars for prayer and devotion. On the other hand, the stained-glass windows enhance the sensory impact on the users.

Technology 

This cathedral represents the gothic style and technologies. This is represented in the higher ceilings and windows. On the other hand, the light system was very complex in this space since designers and engineers needed to create the right balance to eliminate shadows and illuminate the right places.

Finishes 

For the finishes, this Cathedral utilize a lot of arches and columns to structure and define the different spaces inside the building and contrast with the huge spires from the outside. Also, we can see a lot of large stained-glass windows used as walls of the Cathedral. The floor and some of the walls have different patterns that create contrast throughout the space. However, the ceilings and some walls do not have any design.

Furnishings

We can see a lot of different furnishings in the Cologne Cathedral. There are different benches in specific spaces inside the place. Also, there are carpets that lead the person to the main altar that is decorated with gold elements. The Shrine of the Three Kings is one of the most important relics in this cathedral made of gold and gemstones. There are a variety of statues representing different saints.

Telling Stories

The Cologne Cathedral has a lot of history since it is one of the tallest buildings in the world. This cathedral survived from a lot of damages from World War II and was reconstructed with gothic style and elements. It maintains great significance throughout the passage of time representing hand crafted details and creativity architects involved.
