Welcome from the Department Chair

Hi students,

I’m so excited you have chosen to be a part of the Department of Political Science here at the University of Kentucky.  Whether you are pursuing Political Science or Law and Justice, whether you foresee a career in public service, policy, law, data, non-profit work, or otherwise, we are here to help you on your path.

When I started college as a Political Science major, we were excited that the dorms had recently been fully wired for internet access. I was vaguely considering law school, but had no idea how to achieve that goal beyond doing well in classes. I focused on a to-do list: What courses do I need to take?  When are my assignments due?  How do I complete things to graduate on time?

I hope that you won’t take the to-do list approach.

We are continually working to make the Department a place for meaningful experiences and connections.  The Department offers many opportunities for internships, research with faculty, and many other ways to be engaged.  I hope you will take the time to get involved in ways that make sense for you and your career goals.  To explore new opportunities, I also hope you feel free to reach out to me and other faculty at any point.  We are here for you throughout your educational journey, to offer advice, listen to concerns, and make your experience in the department and at UK a rich and meaningful one.  I learned that similar opportunities existed during my undergraduate career, but it took me until my senior year.  We are here to support you from day one.
