Study Abroad

Each semester, students across the University of Kentucky take part in a growing variety of education abroad opportunities. Whether it’s a short academic break program or a full semester—or even a year—UK offers approved programs in more than 150 countries worldwide. As our world becomes more connected, employers increasingly seek graduates who bring cross-cultural understanding, real-world experience, and transferable global skills to the workplace.

Students find that a study abroad helps you explore your options and prepare for meaningful, globally focused learning experiences that will enhance both your academic and personal growth.

Types of Education Abroad Programs

  • Partner Programs: These programs serve students from multiple institutions and provide a wide variety of study opportunities.

  • Exchange Programs: Exchange programs are immersive and allow for deeper cultural and academic engagement.
  • Direct Enroll Programs: This option allows you to experience another academic system while still earning credit toward your UK degree.
  • Faculty-Directed Programs:  You’ll earn UK credit, benefit from on-site faculty guidance, and take part in a focused academic experience abroad.
  • Virtual Programs:  Typically involve virtual classes, cultural activities, and interactions with peers from different parts of the world.

Study Abroad Scholarships

At the University of Kentucky, we believe that every student should have the opportunity to study abroad, regardless of their financial circumstances. We understand that international study may not have been part of your original college budget, which is why there are several scholarship opportunities available to help fund your global experience.

Students are encouraged to explore funding options in the following order:

  • UK Education Abroad Scholarships: These scholarships are administered by the UK Education Abroad Office and are available to students participating in approved UK Education Abroad (EA) programs. These awards are designed to make global learning experiences accessible and are often the first place students should apply. To learn more about eligibility, available awards, and how to apply, visit the UK Education Abroad Scholarships Page.
  • College of Arts & Sciences Scholarships: The College of Arts and Sciences also offers scholarships to help students fund their education abroad. These scholarships are typically available to declared A&S majors who are enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours). Many of these awards can be combined (or “stacked”) with other funding sources, increasing their impact. To view all available A&S scholarships and submit an application, visit the College of Arts & Sciences Scholarships and Awards Page.
  • If you are not awarded funding through the above pathways, you may still be eligible to apply for additional support by completing the Study Abroad Scholarship Application Form, which opens access to a broader pool of funding.

To learn more about how an education abroad program can enhance your academic experience and support your goals, visit the Education Abroad & Exchanges page, and be sure to consult your academic advisor early to ensure your program aligns with your degree requirements. Studying abroad is more than travel—it’s a powerful investment in your future.
