Financial and Other Support

At the University of Kentucky, we recognize that academic success often depends on more than just classroom performance. Some students may encounter challenges that require additional support, and UK is committed to meeting those needs through a range of services focused on food security, mental health, and personal well-being.

Big Blue Pantry

Located in Frazee Hall, Room 016, the Big Blue Pantry is a free resource supporting students facing food insecurity. Students may visit the pantry up to three times per month to receive a bag of groceries. If longer-term assistance is needed, staff will help connect students with other university or community resources.

Additionally, students experiencing temporary hardship can apply for the Swipe Ahead Program, which provides short-term access to campus dining options. This benefit is available once per semester.

For more information, please visit the Big Blue Pantry Page.

Mental Health and Crisis Support

The Triage, Referral, Assistance, and Crisis Support (TRACS) program offers both in-person and virtual services for students navigating mental health concerns or crises. TRACS helps bridge the gap between immediate needs and long-term solutions, often serving as the first step toward more comprehensive care.

Services include:

  • Clinical support for a wide range of mental health concerns
  • Assistance processing recent trauma or crisis
  • Case management and connection to additional resources
  • Guidance on campus-based well-being service

To learn more or access services, visit the Mental Health and Crisis Support Page.

Peer / Life Coaching

Peer Coaching is designed to help new, transfer, and non-traditional students adjust to college life, make connections, and stay on track academically and socially. Peer coaches offer encouragement, share campus resources, and help students set and achieve their goals.

Life Coaching is a one-on-one support option for students dealing with personal or academic concerns. Sessions last approximately 30–45 minutes and are centered around topics students choose to explore. A life coach can help students navigate difficult moments, build confidence, and develop problem-solving strategies.

Department Support for Financial Need

The Political Science Department is strongly committed to ensuring that all students can take advantage of opportunities regardless of financial need. Generous donations from alumni, faculty, and friends of the Department allow us to provide support for students majoring in Political Science and Law and Justice who wish to engage in our internship opportunities. To request support for internship opportunities, please click here.

We also have funds to support Political Science and Law and Justice students who are financially disadvantaged and have specific needs for support. To request assistance from the Department, please visit here.

We do not have specific deadlines or criteria for allocating these funds. Students who find themselves in need of financial support to stay in school or take advantage of opportunities like internships should fill out the forms linked above or contact the Department Chair.

Overall financial aid and scholarships for the University as a whole can be found at the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Page.
