A double major allows you to complete the requirements for two majors. If there is overlap between the two majors, some courses may count toward both. You will need to work with your advisor to identify courses that may count for both majors. Upon graduation, your transcript will reflect the completion of both majors, although only one degree will be awarded. A secondary major can also be completed after graduation.
Additional Bachelor’s Degree (Dual Degree)
Students may pursue a second bachelor’s degree in a different major. If there is an overlap between the two degree programs, some courses may count toward both. You will need to work with your advisor to identify courses that may count for both degrees. This pathway leads to the conferral of two distinct degrees, each representing a separate major field of study.
Academic Minors
A minor is a focused area of study that provides in-depth knowledge in a subject that complements your major or expands your academic interests. While not as comprehensive as a major, minors can signal specialized interest to employers and graduate programs. At UK, minors can only be earned in addition to a major and cannot be awarded on their own.
Many students in the department pursue a minor in:
- Economics
- English
- Gender and Women’s Studies
- Law and Justice
- Journalism
- Political Science
- Public Policy
- Sociology
