Going to Class (Attendance)

Attendance

At the University of Kentucky, attendance matters – and understanding the policy helps you stay on track. Absences are classified as either excused or unexcused. If your absence is excused, you will not be penalized. For unexcused absences, your instructor may apply a penalty if one is outlined in the course syllabus.

Excused absences typically include situations like serious illness, a family emergency, participation in university-sponsored events, observance of major religious holidays, post-graduation interviews, military duties, or other reasonable circumstances. If you are ever unsure whether an absence qualifies as excused, the best approach is to reach out to your instructor as early as possible.

While policies are important, your success begins with showing up. Attending class regularly gives you access to your professor’s insights, lively discussions with your peers, and the chance to ask questions in real time – none of which you’ll find in the textbook alone.
