The Syllabus

Think of the syllabus as your roadmap for each course – a clear and detailed agreement between you and your professor. It outlines what you will learn, what is expected of you, and how the course will be organized. Every University of Kentucky syllabus includes both required components and optional elements, which may vary by instructor. Reading the syllabus carefully at the start of the semester – and referring back to it regularly – is one of the most important steps you can take to stay informed and prepared.

At the top of the syllabus, you will find essential contact information: your instructor’s name, office location, University email address, and office hours. This section will let you know whether meeting are held in person or online, how to schedule time with your professor, and the best way to communicate with them.

The syllabus also includes a course description and a set of learning outcomes that define what you should gain from the experience. You’ll find a list of required textbooks and materials, estimated expenses, and any specific skills or technologies you’ll need to succeed.

Most students focus on the course schedule – and for good reason. This section provides key dates for assignments, readings, quizzes, exams, and projects. It also explains how grades are calculated and what you can expect from the evaluation process. Use this schedule to say on top of deadlines and build a study plan that fits your personal, academic, and work commitments.

In addition, the syllabus covers classroom polities, including attendance, participation, and late work. You’ll also find important information about emergency procedures to follow in case of unexpected events on campus.

Taking time to understand your syllabus can make a big difference in your college experience. For a full overview of what must be included in a University of Kentucky syllabus, please visit the Student Ombud Website.
