Glossary

  • 5 R’s of OER: The rights to Retain, Reuse, Revise, Remix, and Redistribute educational content, ensuring the freedom to adapt and share OER.
  • CC0 (Creative Commons Zero): A Creative Commons tool that allows creators to waive all their copyright and related rights in their works, dedicating them to the public domain.
  • Course Reserves: Educational materials provided by the library or an instructor for students to access at no cost, often in print or electronic formats.
  • Copyright: Legal protection granted to creators of original works, giving them exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, or license their work.
  • Creative Commons Licenses: A suite of public copyright licenses that enable creators to share their work with varying levels of permission for use, modification, and distribution.
  • DRM (Digital Rights Management): Technology used by publishers to control how digital content can be accessed, shared, or copied.
  • Fair Use: A legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted materials without obtaining permission from the copyright holder under certain circumstances, such as for education or research.
  • OER (Open Educational Resources): Teaching, learning, and research materials that are freely available for use, modification, and redistribution under an open license.
  • Open Access (OA): A set of principles and practices that provide free access to scholarly research and outputs, removing financial, legal, and technical barriers.
  • Public Domain: Works that are not protected by copyright and can be freely used, copied, and distributed by anyone.
