Introduction
Congratulations! You have been accepted to the Doctor of Social Work Program at the University of Kentucky.
Your decision to pursue a doctoral education is likely grounded in both a desire to learn and grow and a desire to contribute to the field of social work. You have thought about deepening your knowledge in a specific area of practice or scholarship and you have likely considered the opportunities that an advanced degree can bring to your career. Now that you are here, you are likely experiencing a mixture of excitement and apprehension and have many questions flowing through your head. What can I expect? What is expected of me? How can I make the most out of the program, the curriculum, and the journey ahead? Who do I go to if I have questions along the way? You are about to embark on one of the most important, exciting, and challenging chapters in your life, so apprehension and doubt are expected. You are about to enter an unknown world with its own culture, language, and customs.
This handbook for the recently admitted (with a nod to Tim Burton) will be your field guide as you navigate this new world you are about to enter. You will hear from diverse voices, including the author, College of Social Work staff, faculty, and current and former students. So, let’s get started on the journey of a lifetime!
