Module 3: Managing and Organizing Research
Doctoral Research in Arts Administration
activity 3.2:
Bibliographic Management Tools
Instructions: This activity takes the form of a research questionnaire that helps you consider the pros and cons of using bibliographic citation management software such as EndNote or Zotero. You will reflect on your past experience with similar products, and, after exploring online guides to using EndNote and Zotero, you will think through the ways you could use such a tool in your dissertation research.
Like the Local Library Accounts activity 2.2, this one also takes the form of a personal checklist if you decide you would like to take the opportunity to download and install software, set up an account, and practice importing some sources, if you do not use a system already.
First, “Make a copy” of this Google Doc to save it to your own Google Drive. Then, proceed to complete the questionnaire. To hand it in, share your completed version with kmhink0@g.uky.edu and submit through Canvas.
Questions to consider:
1. Have you ever used a bibliographic management tool or citation management software such as Zotero, EndNote, RefWorks, Mendeley, etc., in your research or writing projects?
2. What are some of the pros and cons, for you, when you consider the time invested and potential utility of using one of these tools?
3. After looking at both products, what are some of the pros and cons of EndNote, and what are some of the pros and cons of Zotero?
4. If you decide to set up a new bibliographic management tool, here is a checklist you can tick through:
Download software | Install on machine(s) | Set up a project | Import a source |
