Module 1: Library Research Materials for PhDs

Doctoral Research in Arts Administration
activity 1.3:
Major Resources in the Arts Administration Field

Instructions: This activity takes the form of a personal research questionnaire that helps you identify the types of journals, databases, and other research tools used in the arts administration field. You will reflect on your past experience with particular products, and think through some ways one could use particular resources in arts administration research. You will also practice identifying places to find various materials.

First, “Make a copy” of this Google Doc to save it to your own Google Drive. Then, proceed to complete the questionnaire. To hand it in, share your completed version with kmhink0@g.uky.edu and submit through Canvas.

Section One: Personal Research Experience

  1. What is your experience with research in arts administration? What are some of the ways that researchers in the field typically use library resources?

  1. These databases and library subscription products are used frequently by scholars conducting arts administration research. Have you used any of the following arts administration resources in your past research projects?

  1. Which databases are your favorites, or which have you found most useful?

  1. If Google were going to discontinue one of its products, either Google Scholar or Google Books, which would you rather keep and why?

Section Two: Thought Experiments

  1. To find out if a book about K12 arts education contained any information on the Common Core, you might look at its table of contents, or in an index included at the back of the book. How would you find out if a particular periodical, such as the International Journal of Arts Management, had ever published an article about the Common Core?

  1. If you were writing a research paper on the Kentucky non-profit arts organization LexArts, how would you begin to look for its financial information, such as executive salaries or IRS forms?

After you’ve thought through these scenarios, help and feedback on this activity can be found at the end of this book in the Appendix 🙂
