Book Description

The Creative Social Entrepreneurs Field Guide is an open-access textbook for artists, creative workers, and cultural organizers who are ready to treat their work as a way to change the world. Written in accessible language, it serves as a practical field guide for turning creative social entrepreneurship ideas into grounded, community-centered ventures.

Across seven parts—Getting Started, Mapping, Listening, Shaping, Resourcing, Innovating, and Adapting—the guide introduces core concepts while continually inviting readers back to their own conditions, communities, and commitments. Early chapters help students see creative social entrepreneurship “in a nutshell,” map their creative and cultural fields, and name missions that connect their practice to specific issues and communities. Subsequent sections build skills in structured listening and customer discovery, designing useful questions, and making meaning from responses so that offerings grow from real experiences rather than guesswork.

Readers then learn how to give their ventures clearer shape and direction by defining a venture concept, articulating mission and vision, and navigating everyday decisions about risk, value, and simple strategy. Resourcing chapters address financial readiness, feasibility, and integrity, encouraging creative social entrepreneurs to align money decisions with their values and realities. Later sections explore social innovation, systems change, and minimum viable projects, helping learners design small, testable experiments that fit their current capacity while still pointing toward larger transformations.

Throughout, the field guide functions less like a rigid business plan and more like a “bread basket on the table of a larger meal”: something small, grounding, and easy to reach for in classrooms, studios, community spaces, and collectives. Embedded worksheets, prompts, and exercises support reflection, planning, and peer dialogue, making this an adaptable resource for courses, workshops, and independent study in creative and social entrepreneurship and cultural leadership
